POWERPLANT 05
PowerPlant was a multi stage sustainable tree-planting music festival held on the banks of Lake Liddell in the Upper Hunter Valley, NSW. Beginning on the 4th of November 2005 the community came together to improve the local ecology, reduce salinity issues, address erosion and celebrate with a weekend of sharing knowledge, music and dance. We created three stages, market stalls, food venues, and workshop areas.
The event showcased inspirational eclectic sounds and performances from a diverse range of local, interstate and internationally touring live, electronic and organic fringe artists. Over 3 days, 3 stages featured amazing sets by the likes of Jeff Lang, Nathan Kay, Old man River and 60 other great Australian acts in a setting of wonderful creations by artists and performers.

On the Saturday of the 3 day event, hundreds of people converged on the prepared revegetation site. Braving the persisting rain conditions volunteers guided by REGEN, the Hunter Regional Landcare Network and the Trustees of the Lake Liddell Recreation Park planted 3000 trees beginning phase one of an ongoing restoration project.
The site was prepared prior to the event by the landowners and the local Landcare team. During the event, the heavens opened and it rained for the duration of the weekend, providing a welcome drink for the newly planted and a great challenge for the event crew to keep the punters dry and the equipment safe.
Highlights of the musical journey were Jeff Lang and Nathan Kaye on the main stage. Mr Peculiar, Dark Nebula, Sun Control

Species and Psyboriginal ripped up the Psytrance stage with their signature sounds and on the Chill Stage, Throbgoblin, the Professor and Daheen played some very cool tunes. All the support acts were of the highest caliber and showed the diversity and depth of talent in the Australian music industry.
On the sustainability side, we recycled a full skip bin of glass and paper and about five bins of plastic and tin. There was one bin of landfill rubbish ( mainly food effected paper and cardboard and other types of food scraps that will break down quickly).
All in all, apart from the rain, a wonderful and successful event. Thanks to the Upper Hunter Valley Landcare Network and the Lake Liddell Trust for their assistance and support.
