On the 19th of August in 2006, REGEN joined forces with Greenpeace to create an awareness event at CQ Lounge, Bondi Junction to help stop the proposed Anvil Hill coal mine from going ahead. This was the first time that we had campaigned to stop something, rather than plant something.
Anvil Hill is an area of remnant forest of the Upper Hunter Valley in NSW. Home to 440 native flora and fauna species. Of these, 25 are listed as threatened, including the glossy black cockatoo, powerful owl and koala. Despite this, Australia’s largest independent coal company, Centennial Coal, wants to turn Anvil Hill into a massive open cut coalmine. Enough of huge coal mines that destroy the Hunter Valley and fuel climate change. Enough of putting coal industry profits ahead of our future. The event was a huge success! With fantastic music, visuals, lighting and decor. Plus hundreds of attendees, many of whom contributed their own opinions of the proposed mine via written submissions to the planning department of NSW at the information stalls.
