ReGen seminar to consider progress of Vic AOD treatment reforms (28/04/15)

Melbourne, VIC, 28th April 2014 – UnitingCare ReGen, the lead alcohol and other drug treatment and education agency of UnitingCare Victoria & Tasmania is hosting its annual free Innovation Seminar at its Coburg site on Thursday, April 30.

The seminar will be opened by the Hon. Martin Foley MP, Minister for Mental Health and will feature a range of presentations on the theme of ‘Innovation, inclusion and collaboration’, by ReGen, partner services and consumers. A panel discussion involving representatives from across the Victorian treatment sector will then consider the current state of sector reform and what remains to be done to improve the accessibility, consistency and effectiveness of AOD treatment services.

ReGen CEO, Laurence Alvis said:

There have been plenty of challenges to overcome in the first six months since the commencement of the new Victorian alcohol and other drug treatment system. This is a good opportunity to reflect on what’s been achieved to date, what work still remains undone and, most importantly, what impact the reform process is having on Victorian communities.

We’re delighted that Minister Foley will be joining us for the discussion of what we as a sector can do to build an inclusive, collaborative and effective treatment service system. Following last week’s announcement of new services through Victoria’s ‘Ice Action Plan’, the seminar provides a great opportunity to discuss the work that we and other services have been developing for individuals and families affected by methamphetamine use

There will be a tremendous scope of experience and depth of expertise on the panel and in the audience. We’re looking forward to a frank, wide-ranging conversation about community needs, the current changes and the future of alcohol and other drug treatment in Victoria.

Panel members include:

• Helen Kennedy – Manager Family Counselling Service (VAHS)
• Elise van der Wal – Consumer Consultant (ReGen)
• Neos Zavrou – General Manager (Odyssey House Victoria)
• Moses Abbatangelo – Senior Manager - AOD Response (cohealth)
• Samantha Naidu – Manager Youth Residential Services (UnitingCare Ballarat)
• Kent Burgess – Director of Services (Victorian AIDS Council)
• Sam Biondo – Executive Officer (VAADA)
• Donna Ribton-Turner, Director Clinical Services (ReGen)
